Gaudenz Badrutt, Ilia Belorukov, Alfred Zimmerlin
Biel/Bienne – Novi Sad – Zürich
electronics / alto saxophone / cello

Ilia Belorukov, a musician based in Novi Sad, originally from St. Petersburg, had a research trip in Switzerland in September 2022. Gaudenz Badrutt was his coach, but long before they started to work together and were involved in different projects since 2013. Their activities included the trio with Jonas Kocher since 2014 and duo since 2017. The Šalter Ensemble in 2023-2024 gave them the opportunity to work together in the context of a larger ensemble. During Ilia’s residency in 2022, Gaudenz proposed to make a trio with Alfred Zimmerlin, with whom he played in a quintet with Jacques Demierre, Daniel Studer and Urs Leimgruber. This session was successful in the terms of music and they repeated and recorded again in 2024.

Wide background of each musician ended up in the form of contemporary improvised music with influences from free improvisation, reductionism and modern electronics. Gaudenz has academic background as a piano player, but switched to use sampling techniques of various equipment (laptop, modular synthesizer) and feedback of effect pedals and eurorack modules. Ilia was involved in extreme heavy music acts as well as connected to very quiet music (Wandelweiser composers and silent improvisation), playing not only alto saxophone, but also different electronics and other instruments. Alfred is not only an improviser and composer of contemporary music, but musicologist and teacher of improvisation. Each musician constantly developing his own vocabulary on chosen instrument in the field of improvised music.
